[BC Card Cup] Korean 6 Players Made the Top 8!
Winning three Chinese players, the victory of the BC Card Cup is before Korea.
In the round of 16 at the 2nd BC Card World Baduk Championship held in the Baduk TV studio located in the 1st floor of the Korea Baduk Association building from Feb. 27th to Mar. 7th, 6 Korean players made the top 8. By that Korea got close to victory of the BC Card cup. On the other hand, two winning favorites, Kong Jie 9p China No. 1 and Gu Li 9p China No. 2, lost. Therefore only two Chinese players advanced to the quarterfinals.
The first Korean winner was Lee Sedol 9p.
The game between Lee Sedol 9p and Kong Jie 9p was considered as if it was the final match. In this game, Lee Sedol 9p made a dramatic reversal and won by resignation after 184 moves. Especially, this game stopped Kong Jie 9p's 13 consecutive wins including the 14th LG World Baduk Championship.
One of the biggest upsets in the round of 16 was the winning of Ahn Joyoung 9p. He defeated Gu Li 9p, the previous winner of BC Card Cup, by 1.5 point after 313 moves and made the top 8 on a world Baduk championship for the first time.
Winning a Chinese emerging player Tuo Jia Xi 3p, Park Junghwan 7p who has a double crown in Korean Baduk Championships also advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time. Choi Chulhan ∙ Park Younghoon 9p and Kim Kiyoung 5p won against Korean players and made the top 8; these wins helped Korea have more possibilities of reclaiming victory over China.
On the other hand for China only two players, Chang Hao 9p and Niu Yu Tian 7p, made the top 8 by winning against their national players.
The round of 8 is going to start from Mar. 18th to 21st held in the same place; in order of Ahn Joyoung 9p VS Kim Kiyoung 5p, Lee Sedol 9p VS Park Younghoon 9p, Choi Chulhan 9p VS Chang Hao 9p, Park Junghwan 7p VS Niu Yu Tian 7p.
Giving a chance for amateur players to take part in the competition and adopting the Cut-Off Award of top 64, BC Card World Championship impacted greatly on Baduk society. In the previous competition, Gu Li 9p of China won the first championship winning against Jo Hanseung 9p by 3-1.
The 2nd BC Card World Baduk Championship allows each player 2 hours and 1 minute's overtime counting for 3 times for the time, and the champion prize is 300 million Won. The Best-of-5 final will start from Apr. 24th.
