America pro Shi KanSheong is now in Korea.
He came to Korea to study Baduk last May and comes back to America this September. During the time in Korea, he attends in open tournament which is not new as KBA and AGA signed the contract. KBA agreed that America pro can attend 5 open tournament sponsored Korea and also agreed to support America pro if they want to study Baduk in Korea.
America is the 5th country to have pro system. Before it, Korea, China, Japan and Taiwan only have the pro system. Shi KanSheong and Andy Liu are first pros from America who got through the system last time.
Shi KanSheong is now studying at Toronto university to become a doctor.
Shi 1Dan had a first game in 2013 olleh Cup against Park YoungLong 1Dan. The game was very closed but Shi 1Dan made mistakes in the end game and lost in the end. Shi 1Dan's goal is to win at least 1 games but he failed in the first game.
After the game, we had an interview with Shi 1Dan.
- You must be pity to lost against Park YoungLong 1Dan.
I felt something strange to play against him as we are closed because of English study. I lost after making many mistakes in the end game but I satisfied with the game on the whole. I will prepare next game and hope to win.
- Do you think there are any differences between Korea and America Baduk?
Firstly, many players are really strong in the end game. And they also showed very good skills in reading.
- What about your winning rate? ?
There are A B C and D group. I am in C group and have 50% winning rate.
- What do you want to do while staying Korea?
I hope to travel south part of Korea a lot. I enjoy unique style of Korea building a lot.
- How did you start Baduk?
I saw people playing Baduk when I walked in the park with my parents. I showed my interests in Baduk and parents let me learn it as I wanted to. My teacher suggested to study in Ne WeiFing Baduk school to become pro in China but I had no way but to immigrant to Canada when I was 9 years old.
- Then how did you study after that?
There were many difficulties for me to learn Baduk in Canada. With lucky, I could know one person who could teach me Baduk called Wu teacher.
We played a lot games which was main training from Wu teacher. After 3 years of teaching, he told me that he has nothing to teach me after that. And I tried to play on the internet and attend many tournaments in Canada.
- When the tournament for only America could be open?
I am not sure but hope it to be happened soon. Now we have open tournaments which allow all players regardless of pro and amateur. But I think we should divide it into two.
- They allow only 2 players to become pro now in America. Isn't it too small?
It is current system but when we allow many to become pro then the whole level will be very low which will be major problems in AGA. We should take time not in a hurry.
- What is the most important tournament for you?
It is US open which is held during the America Baduk Congress. More than 400 people attend and enjoy. And personally American College League is also important which 22 universities from US and Canada attend online.
- Why do you like Baduk?
Baduk let me focus on it perfectly. Whenever I am in bad mood, I can change it by playing Baduk. I am
