European Women Go Championship 2011 - Sep 23-25
Welcome to EWGC 2011
The game of GO, is thought to have originated in China 4000 years ago and has brought together people all over the world, despite their age, gender or ethnical differences. Go also serves as a useful index of progress in gender equality and mirrors the advances made by women in other aspects of society during the last decades. Historically, as with most sports and games, more men than women have played Go. As a matter of fact, pre-war no women could be counted among the strongest Go players and , even if special tournaments for women exist, until recently men and women did not compete together at the highest levels. However, the creation of new, open tournaments and the rise of strong female players have in recent years highlighted the strength and competitiveness of emerging female players. Today, professional women regularly defeat men and it is entirely conceivable that a woman could win a major international competition.
Therefore, we are honored to be the host of this year's edition of European Women GO Championship, which will be held in the city of Sibiu, Romania.
