Studying baduk in Korea - Kyoung-nang Kang 7D
Recently a lot of westerners are showing interested in learning baduk in Korea. While I think that's a great way to improve your baduk level and learn a new culture, I believe the Korean baduk schools are mostly not ready to receive foreigners.
Baduk teachers who don't have experience with western culture can get offended by some of the actions of the western students and the same is also true for westerns without experience of the Korean culture. While I think that's a problem, in my view it's possible to overcome this if the teacher and the student communicate properly, and that's another problem.
Almost all of the baduk teachers in Korea don't speak english. It's easy to see why this is a problem, there can be a lot of misunderstandings if the teacher and the student don't share a common language. I think for people looking to study in Korea for a long period of time it's more reasonable to learn Korean but for the most part that's not really an option, since they usually come to Korea for only 3months. In my opinion it's more sensible for the schools looking to receive foreigners to have someone able to speak English.
