National Youth Weiqi Championships 2011 - Mi-kyeong Jo 8P
The National Youth Weiqi Championships 2011 was held on 12th and 13th March 2011. It is to promote Baduk activities among young children and youth players. In addition, it was used to select Singaporean representatives for the 28th World Youth Baduk Championship. All players have been grouped into six categories by their age. Adults are allowed to compete in the Open Senior category that was meant for players who are sixteen years old and above. There was keen competition for the two Selection categories, for age under sixteen and under twelve, as the top winner could be the potential representative for Singapore to participate in the world tournament that will be held in Rumania August 2011.
The National Pair Baduk Tournament 2011 was held on 2nd and 3rd April 2011. There were three groups (Open, Family and Student) available for competition. Each team consisted of two players. Forty five minutes was given to each team for a game. The Open Group must consist of a male and a female player. The Family Group must consist of players from same family. The Student Group must consist of students and one of the players must be from primary school. Besides individual's Baduk skill, the coordination and understanding between teammates were put into good test during the tournament. There were incidents that unhappiness and arguments raised among teammates due to wrong moves made in a game. It was important to remind players at the beginning of the tournament about the objective of the tournament. It is to promote good friendship and team spirit, in addition to Baduk skill.
The Beginner classes with 5 lessons were conducted in the one-week school holiday in the month of March 2011. Each lesson has a duration of one and half hours. It is to promote awareness about Baduk among young children and their parents. After the holiday class, the students who have potential and strong interest were arranged to attend the regular weekly classes.
