Baduk life in Germany - Young-sun Yoon 8P
Hi! My name is Young Sun Yoon. This is my first column, so let me introduce myself briefly. I am a professional player and was recently promoted to 8p.
I live and teach in Hamburg, Germany, where I have been staying for more than four years. In this column I want to tell you a little about Baduk life in Europe and Germany, and my work. Since I came here, I go to the Hamburg Go Club to teach, where I give lectures and play simultaneous games.
I visit tournaments frequently on the weekend, not only in Germany but around Europe. When I first came here I didn't have much experience in teaching, especially teaching Europeans. The relationship between teacher and student is very different here, and it took me some time to adapt to it.
Students will always ask for a detailed explanation of why a move is good, while in Korea they would just accept it for the time being, try it out for themselves and come back to the teacher with their experiences.
I really can't say which is better. Asking to gain more insights into a move is good, but sometimes I feel that exploring the details of a move by yourself leads to a deeper understanding and the results tend to be remembered better. The right way is probably somewhere in the middle, and for this reason I enjoy the exchange with my students very much.
Now, to give you an idea of what the Baduk Scene in Germany is like:
There are around 2000 active players, i.e. members of the DGoB, the german go association. The actual number of players is probably much higher. You can visits tournament almost every weekend, as almost every major city has their own Baduk club, and organizes their own tournament. Not all of them are equally big, of course, ranging from around 20 to over 250.
Baduk clubs are themselves very diverse, and can be located in cafes, universities, churches or rented rooms. Competition between cities takes place in the "Bundesliga", an internet league about which I'll probably write in a later column.
I hope you got a glimpse of the german Baduk scene, and we'll meet at the Kido Cup next month. You can meet eight professional players, some of which also teach here on WBaduk.
