Singapore Weiqi Assoiciation holds weiqi holiday classes annually, for school students who have strong interest in weiqi, during school holidays in the month of June and December. This December, Intermediate and Advanced level classes were conducted for 10 days with each session last for 3 hours. In addition, Beginner classes were conducted for 12 days, with each session last for 1-1/2 hours, to promote awareness of weiqi among young children and their parents.
For Intermediate and Advanced classes, each lesson was started with a lecture of reviewing a game selected from the most recent international competition. This enabled students to have a good understanding of how professional players played their games during international competitions. The lecture was conducted in an interactive manner with key questions posted to students at critical points of a game. This is to generate the interest of students and to guide them through the thinking process of a game played in an international competition. After that, it was game playing time, that all students were paired according to their skill level to play a game with forty-five minutes alloted. It was then followed by doing exercises in topics ranging from Life and Death, Saving and Killing, finding the best result in a game stituation, and many other topics that were essential to boost up the skill level of the students. At the end of each lesson, the class was grouped into two groups for group competition. The students were very excited during this activity that they cheered for their teammates in order to win the competition as a group. This created a strong team spirit and bonding among the teams, and further enhanced the interest of learning weiqi of students.
In the holiday classes, there were few students who were quite active and not able to focus on the lesson fully. At times, they were quite noisy and ran in the classroom. This has distracted others from learning. The discipline problem needs to be looked into, so as to have a better and condusive learning envronment for everyone in future classes.
Another major annual event in the month of December is the Whampao Weiqi Competition. It was the 11th year this event was run. For this year, it was held on 4 and 5 Dec, with categories ranging from primary school, high kyu, low dan and open.
In addition, the country level competition between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, was also held in December 2010. It was a 3-days event with competitions between representatives from the three countries, teaching games and performing games by professional players and various leisure activities. It is a good platform for weiqi skill promotion and experience exchange, as well as enhancement of friendship between players of the three countries. The event is conducted annually and hosted by the three countries in rotating basis. It is hoped that the event could slowly be extended to include other countries in coming years.
