Vietnam national Baduk competition - Hyang-mi Lee 6D
This column is about Vietnam national Baduk competition.
Most Vietnamese recognize Baduk as a kind of sport. Vietnam has Baduk national competition every year, and once in every 4 years, they have large scale of one. This year is that year, we had large scale competition.
The atmosphere of the competition was similar with National Games of Korea.
Every player in behalf of 7 cities (Ho chi minh, Danang, Bentre, Kinh yang, Thanh hoa, Lam dong, Hanoi) has two matches in each day for 5 days under Swiss league system. Also, they have team matches constituted members of same city.
Hanoi Baduk association sent four best members to China for training of this competition. I haven't played with the players who participate in this competition, because I didn't want to give a feel of defeat to them. They seemed confidential. They joked and took pictures together as a way of relaxation.
I thought Mai in women, Quang (HNO) in men are one of the favorites to win. We won all the games in the first day, but women team had on neck and neck race from the second day. Mai got lost in round 4 by another top class player.
There were 3 favorites to win including Mai, and they made neck and neck game cycle. It was getting more and more interesting!
But on the fourth day, both of another two favorites to win lost twice. Mai was at the head of women's part. She won the championship regardless of last game!

Also Quang in Hanoi team won the championship in men's part by getting complete winning for 8 games! We were so happy to win the unprecedented victory.
Fourth day afternoon, Hanoi team had get-together in a nice restaurant right before the last day of competition. Dung, the chief of Hanoi association, appreciated to me for teaching Baduk. I was so flattered. I know that the reason they had nice result is not only my teaching but also their individual studying.
On the last day, Mai who lost just one time in 4 rounds was fixed to be a winner, but judges of Men's part was getting busy strangely. Quang and Binh got same ratio of winning point. Hanoi team and I felt worried, but we couldn't know what was happened.
Why my anxieties always become true?
Just as felt, the name Binh was on a bulletin board as a champion of Men's part. I felt sorry to see Hanoi team. They were so depressed. I didn't come to Vietnam just for this competition, I have lots of other goals. But that was so ridiculous!
Members of Hanoi team were very mad, so I couldn't offer words of consolation to them. I was really really really sorry.
Eventually, Hanoi team announced boycott of awards ceremony. I thought participation in the ceremony is better, but I didn't offer seeing Quang who was filled with tears.
I learn a lot of Vietnam people after this competition.
The biggest thing I learn about is sense of rivalry between north Hanoi and south Ho chi min is over my imagination. It's so much bigger than I expected.
I hope they are encouraged in positive competition with peace.
It's been a few weeks after competition. I can't stop hearing "when will Lee-Kangwook in Hochimin come to Hanoi? He is cute!! "
I'm loner among women players. I am sad T.T
